A 16″ x 20″ oil portrait. After I transferred the image to canvas, I painted the value scale in black and white. This gives me the freedom to mix my colors and values when i paint in color. This is called Grisaille method the academic way. The first step is blocking in, like mapping. The second stage is working on details. Third stage will be color layer. I have my pallet ready with the Dark, medium and the lights of skin tonal values. I can get 3 more in between values by mixing these values i have on my pallet.
